Soapbox Derby253 viewsMarion and Rochester Cub Scouts came together on November 6 for a soapbox derby on Holmes Street in Marion. The longtime fundraising event was not held in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic but made a roaring return on Saturday, as children raced their homemade go-carts and collected donations for the Murphy and Others, Living Interdependently for Future Endeavors, Inc. Howard Tinkham253 viewsHoward Tinkham’s 100th birthday was celebrated on Sunday with a parade that went from the Florence Eastman Post 280 American Legion in Mattapoisett out to Ned’s Point Lighthouse and back, followed by a party at the hall featuring “God Bless America” and “Happy Birthday” sung by the Showstoppers and refreshments for the many citizens who attended to express their appreciation for all that Tinkham has meant to the town. Marion Natural History Museum253 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum recently held a workshop on the many apps available to help people identify birds in the field. Justin Barrett, Nasketucket Bird Club president and museum board member, went over how best to use apps from Audubon, Cornell, Sibley and many others. We also learned how to record a bird or birds and have each one identified by call simultaneously. The museum wishes to thank Justin for his interesting presentation, and we look forward to our next walk

Rochester Historical Commission253 viewsThe Rochester Historical Commission began its historic plaque program as a way to enhance knowledge of the town's history. Recently, a plaque was placed at the Town Pound on Snipatuit Rd. by commission member, George Owen. The pound was not for household pets but for stray farm animals and problem animals of all sizes. While there were once many stone pounds of this type, most are gone. This pound from 1741 is a concrete reminder of Rochester's past.

Mr. T!252 viewsStudents chanted “Mr. T!” to Mr. Tavares on the roof as they left school June 18. Kevin Tavares, associate principal, challenged the kids to raise 481 canned goods to top Mr. T’s 480 – they collected over 800 instead! Mr. T had to spend the night on the roof of Center School, calling the community out to visit him and bring canned goods so he could match the students’ grand total. Photos by Jean Perry

Special Olympics Young Athletes252 viewsRoughly 120 Tabor Academy students volunteered on January 10 to assist with the school’s first session of the Special Olympics Young Athletes™ program held at Tabor. The program offers children ages 3-7 with intellectual and developmental disabilities opportunities to engage in physical activities vital to mental and physical growth. Spearheaded by Math teacher Tim Cleary and Tabor senior Molly Bent, sessions continue January 17 to March 6 (no session February 7) at 2:00 pm at the Fish Center for Athletics

Alumni Basketball252 viewsThe Old Rochester Regional High School alumni and the ORR boys’ and girls’ basketball teams shared a couple of friendly games of basketball on March 29 during the 2nd annual Old Rochester Regional Hall of Fame Alumni Hoops Classic.
