Volunteers254 viewsPenny Pinchers Exchange, located in the Elizabeth Taber Chapel on Main Street in Marion, spent a very busy April 24 morning working with six, amazingly capable students as they sorted, rearranged, organized, tagged and cleared out all the winter stock and readied the incoming summer inventory. PPX, an all-volunteer group of women, is so very grateful for their help. What these young people did in two hours would have taken two weeks of Wednesdays and Saturdays. Rochester Historical Commission254 viewsThe Rochester Historical Commission began its historic plaque program as a way to enhance knowledge of the town's history. Recently, a plaque was placed at the Town Pound on Snipatuit Rd. by commission member, George Owen. The pound was not for household pets but for stray farm animals and problem animals of all sizes. While there were once many stone pounds of this type, most are gone. This pound from 1741 is a concrete reminder of Rochester's past.

100th Birthday253 viewsRalph Winfield Walker is celebrating a milestone 100th birthday on May 7. Born in 1914, Walker moved to Rochester in 1946 and served on the Finance Committee before serving as selectman for several terms. Walker is credited as the selectman that brought street signs to the roads of Rochester. As the oldest person in Town, Walker holds the Boston Post cane, a longstanding tradition in New England towns. Family and friends honored Walker on May 5 at the Island Terrace Nursing Home where he now resides. Photos

Mr. T!253 viewsStudents chanted “Mr. T!” to Mr. Tavares on the roof as they left school June 18. Kevin Tavares, associate principal, challenged the kids to raise 481 canned goods to top Mr. T’s 480 – they collected over 800 instead! Mr. T had to spend the night on the roof of Center School, calling the community out to visit him and bring canned goods so he could match the students’ grand total. Photos by Jean Perry

Special Olympics Young Athletes253 viewsRoughly 120 Tabor Academy students volunteered on January 10 to assist with the school’s first session of the Special Olympics Young Athletes™ program held at Tabor. The program offers children ages 3-7 with intellectual and developmental disabilities opportunities to engage in physical activities vital to mental and physical growth. Spearheaded by Math teacher Tim Cleary and Tabor senior Molly Bent, sessions continue January 17 to March 6 (no session February 7) at 2:00 pm at the Fish Center for Athletics
