Stayin’ Alive 349 viewsSurvival Week at ORR Junior High kicked off on the early morning of Sunday, June 17, as the 7th-graders boarded the busses for Western Massachusetts for a week of roughing it in the wild. And for this generation, that simply means no electronic devices and no Dunkin’ Donuts. Survival is now in its 46th year and still going strong. Mattapoisett Sailing349 viewsThe Mattapoisett Sailing program is in its final week for the 2020 season. Begun in 2006 in memory of William Mee, the program is open to community children divided into two age groups that meet weekday mornings and afternoons at Mattapoisett Town Beach. From 9-11 am and 1-3 pm, students sail under the watchful eye of experienced instructors and three safety boats. Osprey Rescue349 viewsThe Osprey who was impaled by fishing hooks and left dangling from a power line has been released. Several weeks ago, an adult Osprey was found dangling from a power line in Mattapoisett. He was 20 feet up and had one end of a fishing lure through his foot and the other end lodged deep into his left pectoral muscle. The entanglement caused him to become stuck upside down on the line and he was left struggling to free himself. After a significant rescue effort, he was brought to our hospital for treatment.

Brad Hathaway349 viewsIt took 32 years, but on October 3 Mattapoisett resident Brad Hathaway completed his “Walk around the World” along Aucoot Road, accompanied by well over 100 friends and supporters of his mission refocused some years ago from what had begun as a fitness prescription to a fundraising effort for the Mattapoisett Land Trust. Hathaway, 88, is a co-founder of the MLT and has dedicated his life toward preserving and protecting lands that his ancestors first came upon hundreds of years ago.
