Blind Date with a Book309 viewsThe Mattapoisett Library had a whole day of programs and activities in honor of Valentine’s Day. If you were looking for a new literary lover without all the hassle, the library set up a “Blind Date with a Book” display, where new books of all genres were wrapped up like secrets, waiting to be opened and cuddled up with over the long weekend. Oxfam Fundraising Banquet309 viewsAt the Old Rochester Regional Junior High School on February 13, guests of the Oxfam fundraising banquet got a taste of world hunger when they symbolically experienced the inequitable distribution of wealth and resources during a dinner of either just rice, rice or beans, or a full meal of rice, beans, and baked fish, determined at random by which ticket guests received at the door. Students Teacher Basketball309 views Students and teachers did about as much playing around as they did playing basketball during the students versus teachers co-ed basketball game at Old Rochester Regional High the evening of March 7. The teams were neck and neck throughout the evening – students in white and teachers in black – and neither team seemed to have an advantage over the other at any point during the game. FORM Concert 309 viewsThe tri-town FORM concert brought together students whose combined musicality entertained a full house. The performers sang song style selections from spiritual to jazz and the crowd pleaser “Don’t Worry Be Happy” by Rochester Memorial School. Combining the voices of nearly 300 students the finale was a soulful treatment of “Wade In The Water”. Funds raised through FORM concerts support scholarships awarded each year to graduating seniors who have completed at least two full years in a school music program.

School Nurse Michelle Humphrey showed her gratitude by asking students at Old Colony to create a small plaque thanking the Lions Club to be affixed to the side of the vision screener. Buzzards Bay Coalition309 viewsOne of the educational events the Buzzards Bay Coalition had planned for April vacation brought kids to the 6.1-acre property to explore the marshy beach for a scavenger hunt. The osprey from a nearby nest kept a close eye on the group until the treasures were tallied and the group waded back down the mud-puddled path to the road. Photo by Jean Perry

World Tai Chi and Qigong Day309 viewsA group in Mattapoisett joined others across the globe in celebrating World Tai Chi and Qigong Day on April 26 at 10:00 am, just as other groups did at 10:00 am in their local time zones. Led by Tai Chi Practitioner Colman Fink, 15 locals moved gracefully together with conscious breath in the downstairs of the Mattapoisett Free Library – thanks to the rain that dampened the plan to meet at Ned’s Point for a second year in a row.
