Built in 1504-1645 the walls are among the best preserved Renaissance defences in Europe. The fifth grader also toured Portofino, Florence, Venice and Verona. Phoning It In1293 viewsThe ORR Athletic Booster Club (ORRABC) will hold their annual Phonathon Fundraiser from March 4 - March 20, 2008. Funds raised by the Booster Club have been used to enhance the school’s athletic facilities and to purchase equipment used by all of the teams. Last year the ORR Girls’ Track Team (pictured here) purchased a golf cart using their team funds raised through Booster Club calendar sales which is used by the school’s athletic trainer to respond to athletes in need of care.

Arts in Action1292 viewsSippican School First Grader Emily Hiller tries to create the lifelike ceramic fish from Grainger Pottery on display at the recent “Arts in Action” program held at the school. On May 13, the Marion school hosted its first “Arts in Action” show for members of the staff and local artists. Among other interesting and unique displays were Russian Egg painting, bird carving, mural painting, flip-flop sandal decorating and portrait sculpture.

Citizen Cane1291 viewsMinnie Fermino of 12 Baptist Street in Mattapoisett was recently bestowed with the Boston Post Cane as the town’s oldest resident of record. The cane was presented to Ms. Fermino by Selectman Steve Lombard, Selectman Ray Andrews, and Town Clerk Barbara Sullivan. Also in attendance were Ms. Fermino’s children Caroline, Maurice (Mudgie), Peter and David. Created by Boston Post publisher Edwin A. Grozier, the Boston Post Cane is a New England tradition which dates back to 1909.

One in a Million1287 viewsOne-year-old Madison Gallant of Marion was recently the millionth visitor to Buttonwood Park Zoo in New Bedford since the zoo’s re-opening in August of 2000. Madison was accompanied by her mother, Kate Ostneberg, who was the millionth and one visitor to the zoo. Kate and Madison received a free zoo membership, a $100 shopping spree at the North Woods Gift Store, a train ride around the zoo, and lunch at the Bear’s Den Café.
