Learning From The Past1259 viewsThird Grade students at Rochester’s Memorial School recently got acquainted with Rochester’s rich, historic past thanks to members of the Rochester Historical Commission. Students were treated to a hands-on experience with old toys, primitive household items and educational tools, and learned about early church customs, Rochester’s Native Americans, and changes in the town boundaries as Marion, Mattapoisett, and Wareham eventually broke off from the large township of Rochester to form their own towns.

Citizen Cane1243 viewsMinnie Fermino of 12 Baptist Street in Mattapoisett was recently bestowed with the Boston Post Cane as the town’s oldest resident of record. The cane was presented to Ms. Fermino by Selectman Steve Lombard, Selectman Ray Andrews, and Town Clerk Barbara Sullivan. Also in attendance were Ms. Fermino’s children Caroline, Maurice (Mudgie), Peter and David. Created by Boston Post publisher Edwin A. Grozier, the Boston Post Cane is a New England tradition which dates back to 1909.
