The Scoop on S.C.O.P.E. 349 viewsORRJHS 7th-grade students participated in the annual S.C.O.P.E. cardboard boat race at the beach at the Mattapoisett YMCA last Wednesday, June 20. The students engineer and build their boats – some sink, some sail – and this year team “Funky Monkey” came in first place. There were 15 boats in all this year, all created by teams of four. Sayonara, School! 349 viewsDark clouds and raindrops couldn’t dampen the spirits of students and teachers on June 25 when Rochester Memorial School said farewell until next September. Bandleader Chris Williamson, along with teachers and Principal Derek Medeiros, sent the students on their way with the traditional rousing music. Homecoming Queens 349 viewsColleen Oakes, originally from Marion, and Renee Buteyne, from Rochester, finished the trip of a lifetime on Monday, July 16, having ridden across the United States on their bicycles. Leaving Portland, Oregon on May 2, the two childhood friends arrived at Buteyne’s parents’ driveway about a month earlier than anticipated, greeted by family, friends, confetti, cookies, and of course, hugs. Marion Natural History Museum349 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum Explored Group led by the staff from MattRec had a great week exploring Mattapoisett's open spaces. Along with crabbing, netting fish, building cairns, discovering types of seaweeds and saltmarsh vegetation, and plenty of swimming, we also met Coast Guard Fairhaven and Marion Flotilla members for a tour of Ned's Point lighthouse. We learned about oyster farming with Bob Field and enjoyed a boat tour of Mattapoisett Harbor with the Harbormaster's Office.

Marion Natural History Museum349 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum after school group enjoyed a woodland walk to collect various items from nature. The group collected pinecones, smelled sassafras trees, and had a great time collecting many colors of fallen leaves. Then it was back to the museum to construct plant presses and design colorful specimens. The group will bring their completed works back in a couple of weeks to laminate them. Many thanks to the parent volunteers and Tabor community service volunteers for all their help.

Tree Lighting in Shipyard Park349 viewsMattapoisett held its annual tree lighting at Shipyard Park on Saturday, December 8, treating hundreds to an afternoon of festivities that included live Christmas music, free food courtesy of local restaurants, time to chill with Santa, and, of course, the excitement of the town’s tree lit up for the first time.
