Flag Day468 viewsCenter School students gathered together with Old Hammondtown students by the Center School flagpole on the morning of Tuesday, June 14, to celebrate Flag Day. The OHS band played a number of tunes, while the Center School students sang patriotic songs and listened to Principal Rose Bowman read a series of poems and writings to remind the children of what the American flag stands for. Marion Village 5K468 viewsThe number of participants in this year’s Marion Village 5K might have been down slightly according to race organizers, but the sentiment of fun and competition certainly was not on Saturday, June 25. Taking first place for men was Andrew Sukeforth of Middleboro with a time of 15:43, and Meg Hughes of Rochester won first place in the women’s division with a time of 19:50. Harbor Days 468 viewsHarbor Days came to Mattapoisett this past weekend, and many visitors were gracious enough to spin The Wanderer Wheel for a $1 donation to the Lions Club. Those who played helped raise an extra $523 the Lions Club will use to benefit the community. Octopurrfest468 viewsThe Rochester cat shelter “It’s All About the Animals” held its 2nd Annual Octopurrfest on Sunday, October 2. Raising over $7,000, owner/operator Pam Robinson said this year’s event was “absolutely over the top!” The shelter is in the process of building an addition to create a cat room and a porch. “I cannot thank everyone enough for their wonderful donation and participation,” said Robinson. Mattapoisett Firemen’s Reunion468 viewsRetired firemen gathered to celebrate the first Mattapoisett Firemen’s Reunion on October 16 at Ned’s Point. Former members of the Mattapoisett Fire Department along with several others from Fairhaven, Rochester, and Marion and current members of the department enjoyed the splendid fall afternoon while reliving past events in careers that spanned decades. On hand to greet the men and women as they arrived was retired Chief Ron Scott, who spent 42 years on the Mattapoisett Fire Department.
