Marion Natural History Museum474 viewsOn Valentines Day, the Marion Natural History Museum's afterschool group had a chance to learn about humpback and right whales. Dr. Moore of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution showed the students how a drone may be used to observe a whale's spout to determine its health. We also had a chance to view bubble-netting practices of humpbacks, see how baleen plates fit in a whale's mouth, and discussed the hazards the whales face due to entanglements in fishing gear. Marion Natural History Museum474 viewsMany thanks to Justin and Jess Barrett of the Nasketucket Bird Club for sharing their expertise and helping the Marion Natural History Museum after school group locate many of our spring bird arrivals. We viewed a red-tailed hawk, two vultures, many robins, a downy woodpecker, and many more. The Mattapoisett Library hosted a Blackout Poetry Lab on Saturday, April 21, and provided all the materials for any blackout poet to explore the art form. Chris Kidd attended the Memorial Day observances at Center School on May 28. The Old Hammondtown School concert band under the direction of Cara Kinney played patriotic tunes to a full house, and afterwards the Memorial Day parade headed to the Civil War monument at the library. Sayonara, School! 474 viewsDark clouds and raindrops couldn’t dampen the spirits of students and teachers on June 25 when Rochester Memorial School said farewell until next September. Bandleader Chris Williamson, along with teachers and Principal Derek Medeiros, sent the students on their way with the traditional rousing music.
