Buttonwood Park Zoo’s Annual Poetry Contest335 viewsAlyssa Clancy, a fifth grade student at the Rochester Memorial School, took second place in the Buttonwood Park Zoo’s annual poetry contest. Alyssa’s poem entitled “The Suffolk Punch Draft Horse” took second place in the 5th grade category. Over three hundred entries were submitted from across the Southcoast from 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students. Alyssa took second place last year in the 4th grade category and was the only repeat award winner.

Rochester Road Race335 viewsThere were 225 runners who competed in the 9th Annual Rochester Road Race on August 9 to raise money and collect food for The Food Pantry at Damien’s Place in Wareham. Cottage Restored335 viewsA family has restored an old 1925 stone cottage on Snipatuit Pond in Rochester to its original state, and owner Andrea King gave a presentation on the restoration process to the Rochester Historical Society who got to see step by step how the King family, living in the U.S. Virgin Islands, brought the little cottage back to life to make it their second home. Rochester Fire335 viewsJust before 11:00 am on April 2, the Rochester Fire Department was called out to a structure fire on Vaughan Hill Road in Rochester, with initial responders calling for assistance from the Mattapoisett and Marion Fire Departments and a tanker from Rochester. The house was located on a farm about 1,000 feet from the road down a long dirt driveway, which created a problem for supplying water to the scene.

Octopurrfest335 viewsThe Rochester cat shelter “It’s All About the Animals” held its 2nd Annual Octopurrfest on Sunday, October 2. Raising over $7,000, owner/operator Pam Robinson said this year’s event was “absolutely over the top!” The shelter is in the process of building an addition to create a cat room and a porch. “I cannot thank everyone enough for their wonderful donation and participation,” said Robinson.
