Marion Natural History Museum350 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum braved the snowy weather Wednesday and attending members were rewarded with 18 different shoreline bird sightings. The sightings included a large “raft” of sleepy Greater Scaup, Canada Geese, American Black Duck, Surf Scoter, Long-tailed Duck, Bufflehead, Common Goldeneye, Hooded Merganser, Red-breasted Merganser, Horned Grebe, Ring-billed Gull, Herring Gull, Common Loon, American Crow, American Robin, House Finch, Song Sparrow and Northern Cardinal. Summer Reading Program350 viewsAs a kickoff to the summer reading program at the Elizabeth Taber Library and summer Natural History Museum programming, the Town of Marion was treated to a visit from a full-size whale, two very large dinosaurs and one baby dino named Spike. The Summer Block Party event held on June 24 started inside the Music Hall due to weather but later moved outside. The event also featured faux archeology digs and face painting. Marion Garden Group350 viewsThe Marion Garden Group shared photos of its June 23 tour from Converse Point, the Meditation and Secret gardens and Moon Gate. En Plein Air artist Barbara Edlund Healty captured the beauty on canvas, while MGG member Sylvia Strand directed guests and members Nancy Kiehl, Pam Parziale and Suzy Taylor were also on the scene. Blessing of the Fleet350 viewsThe Reverend Eric Fialho, rector at Saint Gabriel’s Parish, presided as the Town of Marion held its first-ever Blessing of the Fleet on January 1 in Sippican Harbor. One tradition well established the past half-dozen years was the sunflower in the outer harbor, where several vessels tied up to one another at the stern and aimed their bows outward toward the sea in 360-degree formation. Despite the sweltering temperatures, we managed to see the following: 2 Monarchs, Eastern Tiger Swallowtail, Spicebush Swallowtail, 7 Sachems, a Zabulon Skipper, a Viceroy, 3 Clouded Sulphurs, Orange Sulphur, Pearl Crescent and Cabbage White butterflies. Marion Natural History Museum350 viewsOn March 13, the Marion Natural History Museum's afterschool group enjoyed hearing about planets, stars, galaxies and the universe with amateur astronomer Peter Marshall. Peter specializes in studying and taking photos of these rarely seen objects from his home in Rochester, and the kids were happy to share their astronomical insights with the group. The wind was too strong to land on Bird Island, but we had a chance to view the activity on the island from the water and watch the terns catch some fish.
