Arts in the Park366 viewsThe Marion Art Center’s annual “Arts in the Park” event was greeted by a gorgeous weekend, as cars lined Marion’s streets and visitors strolled through Bicentennial Park, ducking into the shade of white tents to visit the many artisans and their goods. Marion Natural History Museum 366 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum enjoyed a presentation by Stephanie Ellis, executive director of Wild Care, Inc. We heard how various animals get hurt, be it hit by a car, rat-poisoned birds of prey, glue traps, etc., and how Wild Care takes care of many wildlife species in their organization. Stephanie brought in "Garv," the Eastern Box Turtle; he was raised as a pet and does not know how to survive in the woods anymore.

Betty Parsons366 viewsAt the Marion Art Center on display through October 28 is a retrospective of works done by gallerist and artist Betty Parsons. From as early as the 1930s through to 1980, Parsons received growing acclaim for her ability and wisdom in selecting art done by emerging artists, primarily those expressed via abstract visual interpretations. Parsons was also an artist, described as both a painter and a sculptor for her work in watercolor and acrylic, but also a sculptor for her found items and driftwood creations.

Halloween Parade366 viewsThe streets of Marion were flooded with Halloween Parade participants and attendees, as members of the Sippican Elementary School Band helped the “witches” of the Marion Art Center lead a procession that began at the Music Hall and went down Front Street, up Main Street past the Elizabeth Taber statue and onto Spring Street, where children were met at Town House by staff members handing out candy for the kids. Marion Natural History Museum366 viewsOn November 15, the Marion Natural History Museum’s community group enjoyed a presentation on the geology of cranberry bogs with USDA soil scientist Maggie Payne. We heard about the glaciers that covered our area and left glacial moraines or hills in some areas of our state, as well as glacial outwash in our area. These outwash areas of sand and gravel can be extremely deep. Chunks of ice melting on the landscape turned into kettle ponds, which filled with groundwater and eventually plants.

Town of Marion Memorial Day366 viewsArmy veteran Charles Brown was the keynote speaker as the Town of Marion held its Memorial Day remembrance ceremonies on Monday morning with a procession from the Music Hall up Front Street to Old Landing, where Air Force Technical Sergeant Mandy Givens served as master of ceremonies that included an invocation by the Reverend Eric Osterday, the reading of “The Gettysburg Address” by Old Rochester Regional High School sophomore Amanda Tomasso of Mattapoisett, the reading of “In Flanders Fields”
