Marion Art Center402 viewsLaser wood-cutting techniques used by artist Makerjake, aka Jacob Ginga, combine contemporary themes with those of his native heritage. Together with Narragansett tribal member Max Brown-Garcia, who has supplied Native American regalia pieces, and Vincent Mancini's creations from cut feathers, these sacred works are part of the Marion Art Center’s indigenous art exhibit, “Exploring Native American Culture: Art, Craft and Inspiration,” through March 25. Betty Parsons402 viewsAt the Marion Art Center on display through October 28 is a retrospective of works done by gallerist and artist Betty Parsons. From as early as the 1930s through to 1980, Parsons received growing acclaim for her ability and wisdom in selecting art done by emerging artists, primarily those expressed via abstract visual interpretations. Parsons was also an artist, described as both a painter and a sculptor for her work in watercolor and acrylic, but also a sculptor for her found items and driftwood creations.

Llama Visit402 viewsLauren and Jeff Paine from Pine Meadow Farm in Mattapoisett brought Chocolate and Patience to visit the children at the Loft School on October 20. The Pre-K class has been learning about Peru this month. The children had a chance to ask questions, see what Alpacas eat, feel their shorn fur and pet their new friends. Marion Veteran's Day402 viewsMarion resident and Technical Sergeant of the Massachusetts National Guard Mandy Givens was the keynote speaker at the town's Veterans Day ceremony on November 11 at Old Landing. Marion Natural History Museum 402 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum community group and the Nasketucket Bird Club had a wonderful birding walk on November 16 led by Justin Barrett. We were able to identify over 18 different species of birds including belted kingfishers, golden-crowned kinglets, and red-breasted Nuthatches. North Atlantic Right Whales402 viewsInside a newly installed mural of a North Atlantic Right Whale across the back wall of the Marion Natural History Museum is the image of two North Atlantic Right Whales as photographed by Dr. Michael Moore while on an expedition. Marion Natural History Museum402 viewsThe Marion Natural Museum after-school group had two great days exploring and mapping Ram Island with our hosts Michael and Hannah Moore. Our gracious hosts allowed us to explore the island beaches, streams, saltmarshes, open-water areas and Osprey nests. Some of the students who attend our programs had not been in a boat or explored an island before. The museum is so very thankful to the Moores for allowing us to explore and map the island. Marion Natural History Museum402 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum’s after-school group had fun with hands-on inspections of some of our local amphibian species. We took a look at Green frog tadpoles, Wood frog and salamander egg masses. We also looked at some of our aquatic invertebrates, such as Water boatman, Caddisfly larvae and others that help by breaking down the leaves at the bottom of the pool and starting the forest food chain.
