Also speaking were Select Board Chair Norm Hills, Town Administrator Jay McGrail, and the Reverend Eric E. Fialho, rector of St. Gabriel’s Episcopal Church. Supporting with their participation were Marion Cub Scouts and the Sippican Elementary School Band under the direction of Hannah Moore.

Marion Art Center402 viewsLaser wood-cutting techniques used by artist Makerjake, aka Jacob Ginga, combine contemporary themes with those of his native heritage. Together with Narragansett tribal member Max Brown-Garcia, who has supplied Native American regalia pieces, and Vincent Mancini's creations from cut feathers, these sacred works are part of the Marion Art Center’s indigenous art exhibit, “Exploring Native American Culture: Art, Craft and Inspiration,” through March 25. Marion Natural History Museum402 viewsTed and Liz Brainard visit with Coahuila, a 700-pound meteorite, during the June 25 celebration of 150 years of the Marion Natural History Museum and the Elizabeth Taber Library. Select Board Chairman Randy Parker visited with museum volunteers, and children enjoyed a wide range of summer activities. Betty Parsons402 viewsAt the Marion Art Center on display through October 28 is a retrospective of works done by gallerist and artist Betty Parsons. From as early as the 1930s through to 1980, Parsons received growing acclaim for her ability and wisdom in selecting art done by emerging artists, primarily those expressed via abstract visual interpretations. Parsons was also an artist, described as both a painter and a sculptor for her work in watercolor and acrylic, but also a sculptor for her found items and driftwood creations.

Llama Visit402 viewsLauren and Jeff Paine from Pine Meadow Farm in Mattapoisett brought Chocolate and Patience to visit the children at the Loft School on October 20. The Pre-K class has been learning about Peru this month. The children had a chance to ask questions, see what Alpacas eat, feel their shorn fur and pet their new friends. North Atlantic Right Whales402 viewsInside a newly installed mural of a North Atlantic Right Whale across the back wall of the Marion Natural History Museum is the image of two North Atlantic Right Whales as photographed by Dr. Michael Moore while on an expedition. Our gracious hosts allowed us to explore the island beaches, streams, saltmarshes, open-water areas and Osprey nests. Some of the students who attend our programs had not been in a boat or explored an island before. The museum is so very thankful to the Moores for allowing us to explore and map the island. Marion Village Christmas Stroll402 viewsDespite eventual rain, the Marion Village Christmas Stroll was enjoyed by many on Sunday afternoon. The event included musical entertainment by Tri-County musicians, Grades 4 and 5 bands from Sippican Elementary School, Sippican Historical Society carolers and Tabor Academy students, horse-drawn carriage rides, street entertainment, seasonal refreshments courtesy of area merchants, goodie bags from VASE, and crafts for kids. Marion Natural History Museum402 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum’s after-school group had fun with hands-on inspections of some of our local amphibian species. We took a look at Green frog tadpoles, Wood frog and salamander egg masses. We also looked at some of our aquatic invertebrates, such as Water boatman, Caddisfly larvae and others that help by breaking down the leaves at the bottom of the pool and starting the forest food chain. Annawon Weeden402 viewsActor and activist Annawon Weeden spoke to a full house at the Marion Congregational Church on May 11. Sponsored by the Marion Art Center, Weeden spoke on all matters indigenous from languages to the creation story shared by many nations. Weeden also noted the use of wampum (created from quahog shells) to make jewelry and as a form of monetary exchange.
