We saw plenty of terns catching fish and an Osprey hover and dive close to Ram Island. Officer Wilson also spent the time to show our kids how to tie up the boat we used and then helped us explore every inch of the patrol boat. Marion Natural History Museum417 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum afterschool group enjoyed learning about Marion's vernal pools last week. We had a chance to handle some wood frog eggs, take a close look at some aquatic invertebrates, and learn about the temporary nature of these important habitats. All specimens were returned safely to their homes after the program. The museum will be open during April vacation week for crafts and exploration. Nolan Fest416 viewsThe first-ever Nolan Fest was held on July 11 at Silvershell Beach in Marion to honor the late Nolan Gibbons, who tragically passed away on August 18, 2020. The festival featured live music and words presented by area and national contributors, along with video tributes and a fire show. We found a leaf-rolling caddisfly larvae, several colorful chronomidge larvae, salamander and wood-frog eggs. Bird Island416 viewsMany thanks to Marion Harbormaster Isaac Perry and the whole harbormaster crew for giving us the experience of a lifetime exploring the nesting habitats of the Common and Roseate Terns when they're in our area. Bird Island has had an extensive amount of work done to promote successful nesting habitat for these species, and it looks like it has paid off.
