Marion Natural History Museum752 viewsDuring Wednesday's “Soil Critters” afterschool program, students had the opportunity to learn about what makes up a healthy soil and how varying numbers of insects populate different types of soil. The soil from the compost pile had the highest number of animals, with 17 pill bugs, 26 worms, two beetles, 34 springtails, two millipedes and one nematode. Sweet Charity751 viewsMembers of the ORR Student Council recently raised $1,600 for My Sisters Keeper Charity, a women-led humanitarian action group co-founded by Liz Walker, anchorwoman for Channel 4 News in Boston. Members of the Student Council pose here with Liz (back center) during a recent visit to the Mattapoisett campus. With this donation they will be able to supply 50 girls with books, paper, uniforms, and writing utensils for the entire school year.

During the program we talked about the life history of sea turtles and saw slides of the turtles that can be found in Buzzards Bay, and learned what we can do to help protect them. We also examined the museum's preserved Hawksbill turtle, and the kids got their very own life sized turtle "egg" made of dough to make into their own baby turtle.
