UCT Mitten Tree611 viewsThe traditional Mitten Tree now on display in the foyer of Upper Cape Cod Regional Technical High School is a project sponsored by UCT’s Student Council. The tree is a way of collecting warm clothing such as hats, scarves and mittens to be distributed to needy children throughout the area for the holidays. The 12-foot tree was donated by UCT student Miranda Collins.

Essay Contest Winner609 viewsHeidi Schneider, an eighth grade student at Friends Academy in North Dartmouth, won first prize in the Dartmouth, Massachusetts VFW Patriot’s Pen Essay Contest. The Patriot’s Pen essay contest gives sixth, seventh and eighth grade students the opportunity to express their opinion on a patriotic theme and improve their writing skills, while they compete for worthwhile awards and prizes. Friends Academy’s seventh and eighth grade English teacher Lauren Corliss encouraged all of her students to participate in the essay writing contest.

Sprinkler Activation at ORR609 viewsThe Mattapoisett and Marion Fire Departments responded to ORR High School at 10:03am on Friday May 8, for a reported fire alarm activation. Upon arrival they found that a sprinkler head had been activated in the auditorium due to heightened heat levels. The cause of the heat was found to be a stuck thermostat on a heater in that area. The students, who vacated the school when the fire alarm sounded, remained outside the school enjoying the warm sunny day as the fire department worked to resolve the issue.

Firefighters' Memorial607 viewsSecond graders at Rochester’s Memorial School took their annual walking field trip to the Firefighters’ Memorial to plant red geraniums. For the past six years, the young gardeners have planted before Memorial Day to give back to the community that has given so much to them. Armed with a variety of digging tools, watering cans, and a host of parent volunteers, these children enjoyed the work and appreciated the support of the Highway Department, Fire Department and Police Department.
