Wareham Area Committee for the Homeless179 viewsAnticipating an especially difficult winter for meeting heating and housing needs, the Wareham-New Bedford Elks recently awarded the Wareham Area Committee for the Homeless (WACH), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization doing business as Turning Point, a $5,000 check for rental assistance and home fuel assistance for neighbors in need. Turning Point serves homeless and near homeless people in the communities of Wareham, Carver, Marion, Mattapoisett, Rochester, Middleboro and Buzzards Bay.

Oil Slick179 viewsMultiple government agencies, including Mattapoisett Fire Rescue and Harbormaster and Marion Harbormaster responded Sunday to the Cleveland Ledge area of Buzzards Bay after a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter spotted an oil slick that U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer Ryan Noel said the oil slick in Buzzards Bay was approximately a mile long and 150 to 300 feet wide, according to a Facebook post made by the Marion Fire/Emergency Medical Services Department. The event, sponsored by the Rochester Fire Department, saw contestants build boats and race south along the Mattapoisett River.
