Storm Damage286 viewsAn uprooted tree lays across the front lawn of a ranch house on Front Street near Silvershell Beach in Marion last Friday. Earlier in the day, a Mattapoisett Fire truck monitored the scene after a downed powerline caused a fire and closed Water Street down the street from Town Hall. North of Route 195 in Mattapoisett, a snapped-off tree is held up by a utility wire. Photos by Mick Colageo and Marilou Newell. November 4, 2021 edition

Sammy Swims278 viewsBoston Pride hockey player Samantha Davis was back in Marion for Christmas Eve, the final day of her 24-day “Sammy Swims” fundraiser for the Travis Roy Foundation. The 2015 Tabor Academy graduate and her friend, Jenna Seibold, an Endicott College student from Reading, swam off the beach from various south shore locations beginning on December 1. The effort drew dozens of participants and raised $15,372 in memory of Tabor legend Travis Roy, who passed away in late October. Photo courtesy Travis Roy Foundatio

Salty's Hat277 viewsDue to a lift needing repair, Salty the Seahorse donned his Santa hat a day after the annual event was scheduled, but one of Mattapoisett’s signature landmarks wears it as proudly as ever on December 10. Originally constructed by gift shop owner Henry Dunseith in the pre-Route 195 mid-1950s when Route 6 was the main thoroughfare to Cape Cod, Salty’s future was as up in the air as his snout before a restoration project in 2000 ensured his long-term future. Lobster Boat276 viewsThe Serene lobster fishing boat owned by Sam Nicolosi sits peacefully in its winter home. During the summer months, Serene is moored in Mattapoisett Harbor when it's not working the waters off Martha’s Vineyard. Lobster fishing has been part of the New England way of life for decades. A 1911 report written by the Commission on Fisheries and Game noted that lobsters were believed to reach as long as 4 feet. Photo by Marilou Newell

Poster Contest274 viewsAdriana Cruz, a Grade 5 student, explained that it took a lot of blue colored pencil to fill in the sky complementing her winning entry in the Rochester Memorial School Christmas Tree poster contest. The blue in Rochester’s sky had gone dark on Monday when Cruz threw the switch to light the town’s tree on the village lawn. Photo by Mick Colageo. December 7, 2023
