Strong as steel 583 viewsShe’s got her heavy duty gloves, helmet, and her steel-toe boots, and she’s ready to show a group of boys and girls that welding is cool, fun, and definitely for girls. Rochester’s Emma Makuch, a freshman at Old Colony, is also a Junior Friend of the Plumb Library and on February 19 she shared her knowledge with a group of kids as part of the library’s February vacation lineup to keep kids entertained and learning. Planting Shellfish582 viewsStudents participating in the Marion Natural History Museum’s recent after-school planting shellfish program with Marion Shellfish Officer Isaac Perry plant seedlings to help repropogate the area’s natural resource. On Wednesday, October 1, the group took advantage of low tide to do some digging and help renew the town’s shellfish beds. They also examined clams and oysters and then buried them in the mud under Mr. Perry’s guidance. (Photo courtesy of Elizabeth Leidhold).

Colorblindness Corrective Glasses582 viewsI was colorblind, but now I see – The Mattapoisett Lions Club has donated a pair of colorblindness corrective glasses to the Mattapoisett Library, and are now part of the library’s ever-growing collection of ‘things’ to check out. Last time, my partner Scott and I checked out a metal detector and had ourselves an adventure. This time, we checked out the glasses and took them around town to see if Scott, who was born with a red-green color vision deficit, could catch a glimpse of a world in vivid color.

Ned’s Point Sunset582 viewsOn a recent Ned’s Point evening, two young girls appear as silhouettes come to life while the setting sun floods the gloom in radiating shades of pink, yellow and orange. Low tide gave the evening travelers a footing on the rocky shore below the lighthouse. And, in the distance visited only by the human spirit, the hope of better days ahead was promised.
