Dolls244 viewsDolls are said to have existed since the Paleolithic Era according to Jenny McIntyre, who on August 6 gave a presentation at the Mattapoisett Free Public Library. The dolls on display spanned from the 1800s to the 1960s, looking out at the audience as McIntyre explained the composition of dolls through the ages. The display showed how dolls reflect the breath of human activity from fancy dress to modest burlap coverings and all walks of life. Photos by Marilou NewellAug 07, 2024

Marion Natural History Museum353 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum's Coastal Exploration group had a great time exploring freshwater and saltwater ecosystems this summer. We took a close look at tadpoles and salamanders undergoing metamorphosis, spotted turtles fighting with each other, a water snake, silversides and shrimp and much more. Many thanks to Marion Recreation Department for turning on the water at Washburn and to Adam Miller and Zack Ciesielski of the Marion Harbormaster's office for their help collecting plankton samples. Marion Natural History Museum288 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum community group enjoyed a presentation on Horseshoe Crabs last week. The museum wishes to thank Derek Perry, Invertebrate Fisheries biologist from Massachusetts Department of Marine Fisheries, for sharing his expertise with us. Although there are many hurdles to overcome for these amazing animals, there is reason for hope, given some of the fieldwork results provided by the many volunteers who monitor our beaches.
