Witch Rock697 viewsThe writing on Rochester’s famous “Witch Rock” has received a fresh coat of paint just in time for the Halloween season. The legend of the great rock, located on private property at the corner of New Bedford Road and Vaughan Hill Road, speaks of a witch hanging at the site, and the native Indians are said to have believed that the spirit of a witch dwells inside the rock and one could hear her cackle and scream on nights of the full moon. Mattapoisett Firefighters Association Chowder Competition600 viewsAt the Mattapoisett Firefighters Association Chowder Competition on Sunday, descendants of the late retired Mattapoisett Fire Chief Donald “Woody” Wood posed together for a photo near an engine Wood operated during his career. Wood’s two daughters, Susan McMahon and Betsy Wood Jackson, along with four granddaughters, a grandson, and three great-granddaughters remembered Wood, with McMahon saying as she gestured to her family, “He’s the reason for all of ‘this’.” Wood passed away just this past May. Monarch Caterpillar 590 viewsA monarch caterpillar devours a milkweed leaf in a small Mattapoisett meadow. Having probably been the last of the four generations of monarchs born since the start of the spring migration back to Mattapoisett (monarchs only enjoy a butterfly existence for two to six weeks), this caterpillar will undergo metamorphosis and likely be one of those that will soon head south to Mexico, flying two miles high in the sky. Cairns601 viewsCairns have started cropping up again along the beach at the Nasketucket Bay State Reservation. The stacks of balanced rocks stand in and along the water’s edge, leaving behind the message to all others who pass, “I was here.” Photo by Jean PerryJul 20, 2016
