The Rochester Council on Aging Book Group meets on the third Tuesday of each month at 10:15 am in the activity room of the COA Building, Dexter Lane, Rochester. Books are available at the meeting or at the Plumb Library. All attendees are requested to bring their library cards. You need not be a Rochester resident to be a part of the book group. Call the library or the COA for more information.

Our book for September is Isaac’s Storm by Erik Larson. We will be discussing this book on Tuesday, September 20 at 10:15 am at the COA.

For their September book, “Just the Facts” Nonfiction Book Discussion Group will be reading The Great Beanie Baby Bubble: Mass Delusion and the Dark Side of Cute by Zac Bissonnette. How many Beanie Babies are you storing at your house? Confess. There was never a craze like those $5 beanbag animals with cute names like Seaweed the Otter. Suburban moms stalked UPS trucks to get the latest models, one sold for $10,000, and some people invested way too much money in them. Just as strange as this mass hysteria was the man behind it. Ty Warner devoted all his energy to creating what he hoped would be the perfect stuffed animal. Did he succeed? Why did people lose their minds over a stuffed animal? We will discuss this book on Thursday, September 22 at 6:30 pm.

The Café Parlez’ selection for September is Turn of Mind by Alice LaPlante. Dr. Jennifer White, recently widowed and a newly retired orthopedic surgeon, is entering the beginning stages of dementia when her life-long friend and neighbor Amanda is killed. Dr. White is the prime suspect, and she herself doesn’t know if she did it or not. Narrated in her voice, a picture emerges of the intimate and complex alliance between the two women who were at times each other’s most formidable adversaries. We will discuss this book on Thursday, September 29 at 6:30 pm. Books are available at the desk.
