Turkey Trot 5K 353 viewsSunday was the morning of the annual Turkey Trot 5K in the center of Marion. Yes, it was rainy and windy, but the 80 turkeys (we mean participants) that showed up anyway still enjoyed the scenic village trot. Photos by Glenn C. Silva

Marion Natural History Museum353 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum wishes to thank Kitty Degroot for sharing her expertise as a beekeeper with our group. The students learned that 10 bees weigh the same as one M&M, and how bees communicate by dancing. We explored beekeeping equipment and which hive box holds the queen and which holds the honey. The museum also wishes to thank the volunteers who assisted with the program. Photo courtesy Elizabeth Leidhold

Found Objects353 viewsAt the Marion Art Center, the artists featured in the MAC’s latest show “Found Objects” have ‘discarded’ tradition for trash. All the works on display are made from ‘upcycled’ and ‘repurposed’ bits and bobs, proving that some art literally can be trash. Photos by Jean Perry

Marion Natural History Museum353 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum after school group had a great time working with natural materials to create structures, candleholders, jewelry boxes, cairns, and a communal landscape complete with bridge, benches, and trees. As usual, the kids exhibited outstanding cooperation, creativity, and imagination. The museum thanks the following for helping the students with their creations: David Dodge, Faye Parker, Katie Resendiz, Kylie Snider, Alex Giannans and Evan Costa. Photo courtesy Elizabeth Leidhold

Marion Natural History Museum353 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum wishes to thank Blake Dinius, entomologist with the Plymouth County Extension Service, for sharing his knowledge of our backyard bugs. Did you know that the cecropia moth is Massachusetts’ largest insect? And that it has a wingspan of up to 6 inches? Blake also brought in a live praying mantis and many specimens of moths and winged insects under glass to take a close up look at with magnifiers. The museum also wishes to thank all the volunteers who helped with the program

Marion Natural History Museum353 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum's after school group had a great time learning the difference between wild animal tracks, including coyote, raccoon, and bobcat. We also enjoyed practicing how to move like various animals by waddling, walking, bounding, and hopping. Bounding like a fisher cat and hopping like a snow shoe hare were by far the most difficult gaits to practice due to the placement of the rear feet versus the front. Many thanks to Jennifer Carlino for sharing her considerable expertise with us

This year’s weather was a major improvement from last year’s soaking, but overall participation was down this year. Still, those who have been racing year after year made it another successful race, continuing an important Tri-Town tradition. Photos by Jean Perry

Marion Natural History Museum353 viewsOn Friday night, the Marion Natural History Museum hosted Dr. Michael Moore of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute for his presentation, “North Atlantic Right Whales,” an inside story on the plight of the population of right whales. He spoke about whale entanglement and described the damage conventional lobster fishing equipment does to a whale's anatomy. He also gave us some hope for the future, as more recently developed technologies are adopted to prevent entanglements from stationary lobster gear sus
