Pizza with Santa322 viewsIt’s never Christmas in Marion until you’ve sat on Santa’s lap followed by a slice of pizza. Sunday was the annual Pizza with Santa, hosted by the Marion Police Brotherhood. Guests brought donated toys for families in need and enjoyed a hot slice of pizza with the man of the hour. Photos by Jean Perry

Practically Penguins 322 viewsThe waterfowl in the harbors, rivers, and estuaries of Mattapoisett over the weekend got a taste of what it’s like to be penguins. They are seen here huddling for warmth, scavenging for food, and sharing the tight spaces of whatever scarce water surface area remained Sunday at sunset. Photos by Jean Perry

Winterfest322 viewsORRJHS hosted a fun Friday night for Grades 6-8 on January 19, providing a ‘Winterfest’ to break up the chilly season with some heated up fun, such as dancing to a DJ, disco lights, and an inflatables room complete with jousting, bouncing, and inflatable sumo wrestling. And don’t forget the cocoa, cookies, and cotton candy, which took on a snowy-like life of its own as 12th grade AmbassadORs tried to keep up with the supply … and demand. Photos by Jean Perry

Marion Natural History Museum322 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum's after school group had a great time learning the difference between wild animal tracks, including coyote, raccoon, and bobcat. We also enjoyed practicing how to move like various animals by waddling, walking, bounding, and hopping. Bounding like a fisher cat and hopping like a snow shoe hare were by far the most difficult gaits to practice due to the placement of the rear feet versus the front. Many thanks to Jennifer Carlino for sharing her considerable expertise with us

Marion Natural History Museum322 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum's afterschool group enjoyed learning the history of the Bird Island lighthouse and viewing the return of the birds to the island. We spotted roseate terns, common terns, oyster catchers, some unhappy Canadian geese, and a nesting mallard duck. We also learned about the recent restoration efforts made by the state Department of Fish and Wildlife to improve drainage and provide adequate nesting habitat for the returning birds. We wish to thank Isaac and Pete of the Marion Har

Sharing the Harvest322 viewsOn September 25, 70 Old Hammondtown School 6th-graders went to "Sharing the Harvest," a volunteer-staffed farm at the Dartmouth YMCA that grows and distributes fresh food to local food banks. Students processed thousands of pounds of butternut squash, prepared seedling trays, planted garlic for next year's harvest, and unearthed sweet potatoes, despite the rain. The trip was sponsored by the PTO as part of a new social studies framework. Photos courtesy of Sara Jacobsen.

Marion Holiday Stroll322 viewsThe Marion village streets were filled with holiday revelers on Sunday, December 9, for the annual Marion Holiday Stroll. Santa’s boat docked at the Marion Wharf where the faces of hundreds of children lit up at his arrival. Santa boarded a horse-drawn carriage and paraded through the streets, passing businesses offering free goodies and dodging the whereabouts of that old Grinch who didn’t seem to mind Christmas coming at all this year.
