Submersibles335 viewsSteering, propulsion and buoyancy were the topics at-hand during the Marion Natural History Museum’s afterschool group’s latest program, “Submersibles” with engineer Mark Whalen. The students had a chance to conduct a variety of experiments and create their own mini-submersibles to take home. This is sixth grade teacher Danni Kleiman’s 29th year as the play director, producer, and writer. The performance is Friday, May 1 at 7:00 pm in the school cafetorium.

Mattapoisett Firefighter’s Association335 viewsThe Mattapoisett Firefighter’s Association hosted a chowder competition on September 13 on the Mattapoisett Knights of Columbus grounds. Between 300 and 400 guests came to sample the chowder of 16 different teams, split into two categories: public safety and professional. Supermoon Eclipse335 viewsA blood red Harvest Moon hangs above Ned’s Point in Mattapoisett where some people had a stellar view of the rare celestial event of a total lunar eclipse of a supermoon. Dozens came to watch the moon on Sunday night as it passed through the Earth’s shadow between 9:07 pm, when the partial eclipse began, and 12:27 am when the spectacle ended. Photo by Colin Veitch

Marion Natural History Museum335 viewsOn January 24, the Marion Natural History Museum's after-school group investigated different adaptations wild animals make to get through the winter months. We spoke about different types of food sources animals use, as well as their caches/larders and how to identify them in the field. We also had fun working on a bird feeder project to bring home. Santa’s boat docked at the Marion Wharf where the faces of hundreds of children lit up at his arrival. Santa boarded a horse-drawn carriage and paraded through the streets, passing businesses offering free goodies and dodging the whereabouts of that old Grinch who didn’t seem to mind Christmas coming at all this year.
