Marion Natural History Museum341 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum's afterschool group enjoyed learning the history of the Bird Island lighthouse and viewing the return of the birds to the island. We spotted roseate terns, common terns, oyster catchers, some unhappy Canadian geese, and a nesting mallard duck. We also learned about the recent restoration efforts made by the state Department of Fish and Wildlife to improve drainage and provide adequate nesting habitat for the returning birds. Sharing the Harvest341 viewsOn September 25, 70 Old Hammondtown School 6th-graders went to "Sharing the Harvest," a volunteer-staffed farm at the Dartmouth YMCA that grows and distributes fresh food to local food banks. Students processed thousands of pounds of butternut squash, prepared seedling trays, planted garlic for next year's harvest, and unearthed sweet potatoes, despite the rain. Octopurrfest341 viewsOctopurrfest is one of those annual fundraisers that get bigger and better every year. It’s All About the Animals, a non-profit cat shelter in Rochester, hosted its Halloween-themed outdoor event on Sunday, Octopurr 14, featuring live music, a huge raffle, lots of vendors and food and, of course, a glimpse of all the adorable kittens and cats available for adoption.
