Murphy the dog405 viewsFirefighters in Rochester rescued Murphy the dog from the icy waters off of Sarah Sherman Road after straying from his family and falling through the thin ice on December 20. Firefighter Jeff Eldridge mounted an ice sled and headed 300 feet across the frozen pond to reach Murphy. The two were then pulled to land and Murphy was promptly taken to the ambulance. Pictured here, Murphy is warmed up by RFD Paramedic Jon Villa. Photo courtesy of the Rochester Fire Department

Survival Week 405 viewsSurvival Week is as much a test of ORR seventh-grade students’ wilderness survival skills as it is a test of their parents’ ability to make the most of the week without their kids. On Sunday, June 9, parents, siblings, and family pets waited eagerly for their children’s arrival from Survival 2019. After a few big hugs, parents whisked their kids away to home and a hot shower. National Night Out405 viewsEEE can’t stop the NNO! (And neither can a little rain and thunder.) Despite an EEE “high risk” alert, the 7th annual Tri-Town National Night Out on Tuesday, August 6, was underway in front of ORR attracting locals to enjoy a summer afternoon of interacting with our emergency first responders and exploring the tools of their trade. Rochester Country Fair405 viewsThe Rochester Country Fair pressed on in the face of a “critical” EEE threat in Rochester over the weekend, August 10-11. Festivities were canceled for Thursday and Friday, but there was plenty of tractors, music, vendors, and fried fair food to keep the spirit of the Rochester Country Fair alive. Photos by Jean Perry

Octoberfest404 viewsThe Sippican Tennis Club was the site of the third annual Buzzards Bay Habitat for Humanity Octoberfest on September 19 in Marion Village. Music was provided by Felonious Funk, and party-goers enjoyed a wide array of finger foods and fine spirits. Friendly conversation lingered over the silent auction tables, which offered original oil paintings, handmade felted purses, memberships to the Wareham YMCA and the Marion Art Center, and plenty of gift certificate to area businesses. Snowgirl404 viewsWhen the winter blues kick in, people either have fun or go crazy. Someone had a great time making this string-bikini snowgirl while they dreamed of warmer days and sunny climates. Snowgirl was found on Route 6 in Mattapoisett. Photo by Anne OBrien-Kakley.

River Road Flood404 viewsA rainstorm on March 29 and 30 wreaked havoc on Massachusetts, leaving the Commonwealth in a state of emergency. The real fall-out didnt arrive until March 31, when water tables reached record heights and dams in the region were tested to their maximum capacity. The Hathaway Pond Dam in Rochester needed reinforcement with sandbags and the area of Plumb Corner and Dexter Lane became a makeshift pond. The Mattapoisett River overflowed its banks, shutting down River Road for a day. Photos by Tim Smith.
