Marion Natural History Museum407 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum had a great time learning how to identify some of our rare turtles and what to do if we find one. We found out which is our smelliest turtle and which can close up into a "box" so tight you can't even slip a piece of paper between its shell. The students had a chance to get up close with a diamondback terrapin, an Eastern box turtle, and an enormous Plymouth red-bellied cooter. Marion Natural History Museum407 viewsOne hull or two? On March 11, the Marion Natural History Museum afterschool group explored the physics behind sailboat design. Mark Whalen, engineer with Massachusetts Maritime Academy, introduced several alternative design ideas for constructing our own sailboats. The students explored a variety of hull designs, mast locations and different sizes and shapes of sails. Then they raced the vessels in rain gutters to see which design moved fastest.

The Community Preservation Committee recently voted to approve two appropriations of $90,000 each toward the building’s renovation, including a historically appropriate Main Street entry way featuring mahogany doors, the replacement of windows, and a restoration of the facade. Santa Arrives406 viewsMattapoisett held its annual holiday celebration and tree lighting on Saturday, December 5, 2009 at Shipyard Park. The rain couldn't dampen holiday spirits as visitors enjoyed delicious food and listened to Christmas music performed by the Showstoppers. Children made their own ornaments and hung them on the Christmas tree. They also danced with Rudolph and Frosty and shared their Christmas wishes with Santa Claus. Photo by Felix Perez.
