Marion Natural History Museum 409 viewsOn August 8, the Marion Natural History Museum hosted Amy Kukulya, a research engineer with Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and one of the lead authorities on the SharkCam research vehicle. Kukulya spoke about the science of tagging great white sharks and shared video footage as a SharkCam was repeatedly attacked by a shark; yet, with only a dent, survived to continue following and monitoring these incredible animals.

Abigail Field409 viewsThe delightful Abigail Field, a student of history and appreciator of historical female fashion, gave a presentation on women’s fashion from the World War I era at the Mattapoisett Museum on September 8. Dressed in clothing and jewelry typical of the period between 1910-1920, Field discussed the war’s impact on the evolution of women’s fashion, the ensuing concept of comfortable clothing, and the male-dominance of the fashion industry. Octopurr Fest409 viewsIt’s All About the Animals held its 5th annual Octopurr Fest on October 6. The fundraiser featured food, games, music, and craft booths. Owner and operator of the no-kill shelter, Pam Robinson, said 100 percent of all proceeds would go directly to the care of the felines. Mattapoisett Fire 409 viewsAutism Awareness is in the air this November at the Mattapoisett Fire Station after firefighters completed special training to help them understand how to provide appropriate support for an autistic person during an emergency call. The training was sponsored by the Autism and Law Enforcement Coalition (ALEC) and led by an area firefighter who is the parent of an autistic child.
