Tornado in Mattapoisett114 viewsAn EF-1 tornado touched down late Tuesday morning in Mattapoisett. The unusual weather event downed power lines and hundreds of trees, knocking out power to many homes north of Route 195. Television news crews descended from Boston, as the Mattapoisett Fire and Police departments worked with utility companies and many power lines to clean up roads and assist area residents coming home to frightening scenes. The event included musical entertainment by Tri-County musicians, Grades 4 and 5 bands from Sippican Elementary School, Sippican Historical Society carolers and Tabor Academy students, horse-drawn carriage rides, street entertainment, seasonal refreshments courtesy of area merchants, goodie bags from VASE, and crafts for kids. Keep on Plungin’ 114 viewsThe annual Keep on Plungin’ New Year’s Day swim drew well over 100 participants to Mattapoisett Town Beach, continuing a tradition started in 2013 by Will and Michelle Huggins to help families facing expenses related to cancer care. In the last two years, the community-driven effort has benefitted three families and Dana Farber with a $1,000 donation in Huggins’ honor. Dunseith Gardens114 viewsPeople gathered on Saturday morning at Dunseith Gardens in Mattapoisett to enjoy the “Coretta” story walk, a collaboration of the Mattapoisett Land Trust, Tri-Town Against Racism, and the Mattapoisett Free Public Library. The story walk based on the autobiography of Coretta Scott King points to the importance of providing children with printed reading materials that represent diversity and inclusion.
