Marion Natural History Museum117 viewsOn October 20, the Marion Natural History Museum’s after-school group spent time learning a little about our migrating bird populations. We found out that the Arctic tern migrates 50,000 miles, which is the longest distance of any bird. The ruby-throated hummingbird can migrate as far as Mexico and Central America in search of flowers and insects. We then went on a bird walk and managed to find a mourning dove, blue jay, European starling, black-capped chickadee, and belted kingfisher, among other birds.

Soapbox Derby117 viewsMarion and Rochester Cub Scouts came together on November 6 for a soapbox derby on Holmes Street in Marion. The longtime fundraising event was not held in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic but made a roaring return on Saturday, as children raced their homemade go-carts and collected donations for the Murphy and Others, Living Interdependently for Future Endeavors, Inc. Festival of Trees 117 viewsThe Festival of Trees opened on November 27 with a reception at the Cushing Community Center on Route 6 in Marion. Sponsored by the Friends of Marion Council on Aging, the event showcased 14 decorated Christmas trees, along with an artisan sale, music, refreshments and a raffle for over 10 gift baskets. Together with Narragansett tribal member Max Brown-Garcia, who has supplied Native American regalia pieces, and Vincent Mancini's creations from cut feathers, these sacred works are part of the Marion Art Center’s indigenous art exhibit, “Exploring Native American Culture: Art, Craft and Inspiration,” through March 25. Loft School117 viewsThe Loft School of Marion held its Preschool Art Show and Pre-K Celebrates the World Tour on April 6. The boys and girls invited their families to view all the amazing artwork they have created this year. The Pre-K class has spent the year traveling around the world, learning about different countries such as Italy, Portugal, Germany and Costa Rica. The children shared unique projects and interesting facts about each country with their families. It was nice to be able to invite families into school again. A

Cuttyhunk117 viewsWendy Copps conducted an “Ocean in Motion” exercise at Barges Beach, and Kate Armstrong led children in an exploration of the saltmarsh as part of Old Hammondtown Elementary School’s field trip to Cuttyhunk on June 16. Approximately 70 Grade 6 graduates made the ferry ride from Mattapoisett to take part in a science field trip organized by the Mattapoisett Land Trust Education Committee and held in conjunction with the Massachusetts Cultural Council and the STEAM Academy. Marion Natural History Museum117 viewsTed and Liz Brainard visit with Coahuila, a 700-pound meteorite, during the June 25 celebration of 150 years of the Marion Natural History Museum and the Elizabeth Taber Library. Select Board Chairman Randy Parker visited with museum volunteers, and children enjoyed a wide range of summer activities.
