Library Zoo182 viewsLauren Paine of Pine Meadows Farm located in Mattapoisett, along with her father, Jeff, brought members of their “herd” to the Elizabeth Taber Library in Marion on July 8. Well over 100 people of all ages enjoyed the opportunity to visit with and learn about exotic animals. The younger members of the crowd listened intently as they heard about the eating habits and habitats of bearded dragons, Nigerian goats, lop-eared rabbits, tortoises, and alpacas, for which the farm is known. Mattapoisett Sunset182 viewsA spectacular sunset is a spectacular sunset anytime of the year, and this one took over southwest Mattapoisett on November 10, only an hour earlier than it would have in October. The afternoons were already getting shorter before the resetting of the clocks dramatically altered our seasonal mindscape under a sun that sits farther and farther south, giving way earlier in the day to big orange moons emerging from the horizon. Rose Bowman182 viewsRose Bowman, seen on Monday outside Center School, is retiring as principal of Mattapoisett Schools at the end of this academic year. Bowman’s career dates back to 1971 when she began teaching at the Hathaway School in New Bedford. She has been serving in the Old Rochester Regional School District over 30 years and says that education has evolved so that children are consumed less with rote instruction and now are learning how to think through creative problem-solving. Vegan182 viewsTo vegan or not to vegan? That was the question taste testers answered when the Mattapoisett Library hosted another chapter of their sustainable initiative programming on February 26. Library Director Jennifer Jones prepared and served vegan substitutes of chicken, hot dogs, sausage, and lunchmeat. The participants nibbled each offering with great anticipation. The overriding takeaway was that some faux meats might be acceptable in a casserole. Photo by Marilou Newell March 3, 2022 edition
