Marion Natural History Museum184 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum wishes to thank Dr. Moore for sharing some of his considerable background in whale biology with our after-school group. We learned about some of the success stories as well as some of the challenges, such as fishing gear and boat strikes, that whales face off our shores. To learn more please visit the International Fund for Animal Welfare website, (IFAW.org).

Rochester Council on Aging St. Patrick's Day Luncheon184 viewsThe folks at the Rochester Council on Aging never miss a holiday or a chance to gather together to celebrate. On Friday, March 14, the COA hosted an Irish luncheon, complete with, of course, corned beef and cabbage to mark the occasion. Irish or not, most donned their St. Paddy’s green and broke bread together with Selectman Naida Parker, who assisted in serving up lunch, along with COA Director Sharon Lally. At the COA, Irish eyes are always smiling… By Jean Perry

Marion Natural History Museum 184 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum hosted their very first Earth Day Celebration on April 19, providing little ones with activities that focused on our planet and stimulated their senses. There was a make your own planet earth pinwheel table, a station to decorate your own “Earth cookie” with green and blue icing, a puppet show stage, and a boat load of Legos to play with while the sounds of croaking frogs and crickets played in the background. Easter in Rochester184 viewsThere was no other place a kid in Rochester would rather be the day before Easter than in the fields at Plumb Corner. Well over a hundred children lined the two fields, ready to hunt the hundreds of colorful plastic Easter eggs filled with candy that lay in the grass before them. Photo by Jean Perry

World Tai Chi and Qigong Day184 viewsA group in Mattapoisett joined others across the globe in celebrating World Tai Chi and Qigong Day on April 26 at 10:00 am, just as other groups did at 10:00 am in their local time zones. Led by Tai Chi Practitioner Colman Fink, 15 locals moved gracefully together with conscious breath in the downstairs of the Mattapoisett Free Library – thanks to the rain that dampened the plan to meet at Ned’s Point for a second year in a row. Memorial Day Boat Race184 viewsKeeping with an 80 year-old tradition, people with their home made boats raced toward the finish line during the annual Rochester Memorial Day Boat Race. Beginning at Grandma Hartley’s Reservoir on Snipatuit Road, boaters paddled the almost 12-mile race route to Herring Weir at River Road in Mattapoisett. There were 65 teams in all. Miles for Memorial Annual Fitness Challenge184 viewsSmiling faces beneath sunny skies, Rochester Memorial School was the setting May 30 for a day of outdoor fun and fitness during the Miles for Memorial Annual Fitness Challenge. With soccer, Frisbee, hula-hoops, and dance parties, kids were in constant motion everywhere you looked and one could hear music, laughter, and cheering from every corner of RMS’s green grassy grounds. Seniors Appreciation at Center School184 viewsOne of the highlights of the third-grade school year, students dressed up as famous Americans and treated senior citizens from the Council on Aging to a senior citizen appreciation breakfast the morning of June 6. The third-graders sang patriotic songs like the Star-Spangled Banner and My Country ‘Tis of Thee, dressed as the American figure of their choice. Photo by Jean Perry

Marion 4th of July Parade184 viewsThe cool, post-Hurricane Arthur breeze was a welcomed factor in Marion’s July 5th 4th of July Parade, postposed because of the heavy rains the day before. Hundreds turned out to line the streets in Marion Center and along the parade route that looped around the center of Town. Photos by Jean Perry
