Marion 4th of July Parade207 viewsThe cool, post-Hurricane Arthur breeze was a welcomed factor in Marion’s July 5th 4th of July Parade, postposed because of the heavy rains the day before. Hundreds turned out to line the streets in Marion Center and along the parade route that looped around the center of Town. Photos by Jean Perry

Tabor Academy’s Oyster Farm207 viewsTabor Academy’s oyster farm is like a marine biology lab by the sea, providing students with hands-on learning experience. The school hosts a summer camp where campers can explore oyster farming firsthand, compiling “oyster reefs,” large piles of oysters, and depositing them into salt water. Here, David Bill of the Nautical Science Department at Tabor inspects an oyster bag from his skiff Ting. Photo courtesy Tabor Academy

Mattapoisett Historical Society207 viewsEver tried eating a salty piece of hard tack, made your own signal flags, or learned to tie nautical knots? Some pint-sized future sailors at the Mattapoisett Historical Society Museum learned about what it was like to be a sailor back in the whaling days, with a little bit of history sneaked into all the fun and games. Submersibles207 viewsSteering, propulsion and buoyancy were the topics at-hand during the Marion Natural History Museum’s afterschool group’s latest program, “Submersibles” with engineer Mark Whalen. The students had a chance to conduct a variety of experiments and create their own mini-submersibles to take home. Many thanks go to Mark Whalen, engineer with Sippican/Lockheed Martin for all his hard work pulling this program together for us. Photos courtesy Elizabeth Leidhold
