Marion Holiday Stroll211 views It was all about Santa on December 10 for the annual Marion Holiday Stroll, although at first the Grinch stole the show (but not Christmas) until Santa made his big arrival at Town Wharf to the chanting of his name, stealing back from the Grinch his rightful place as the center of attention. Christmas Day Swim211 viewsThe Helping Hands and Hooves’ annual Christmas Day Swim was preceded by a polar plunge in the weather and a brief ‘snownado’ of sorts as the winds swept snow and sleet across the area only minutes before enthusiastic participants in costume arrived at the Mattapoisett Town Beach and raced into the icy waters. RMS Students vs. Staff Basketball Game211 viewsTough luck again this year for the sixth graders at RMS during the annual students vs. staff basketball game on Friday night. Although students were able to tie the game and gain a temporary slight lead, in the end the staff’s moves took them down, 60-56. Fifth graders, it’s up to you next year! Photos by Deina Zartman

Marion Natural History Museum211 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum’s afterschool group had a chance to learn to identify certain local trees in winter by their bark. Students compared red cedar bark to red pine, took a close look at various lichens and mosses that use tree bark as a surface to grow on, and counted rings in a log supplied by Hartley Saw Mill in Rochester.

Harbor Days211 viewsSaturday was a splendid day to celebrate Harbor Days, with thousands turning out throughout the day ahead of Sunday’s dubious weather forecast that caused the early end to the annual weeklong event at Shipyard Park. The Lions Club reports a higher-than-average turnout, and proceeds to benefit charity were also up this year. Photos by Jean Perry

Marion Natural History Museum211 viewsThe Coastal Explorations group from the Marion Natural History Museum had a wonderful time learning about plants and soils, frogs and tadpoles, oyster farming, sea turtle anatomy, and seaweeds.
