15th annual Christmas Day Swim223 viewsWith light breezes and near freezing temperatures, Christmas Day 2016 found a hail and hearty group diving into Mattapoisett Harbor from town beach to benefit Helping Hands and Hooves. The 15th annual Christmas Day Swim took place at 11:00 am with many participants saying it was a family tradition they cherish. One hundred percent of the proceeds benefit the nonprofit organization that provides therapeutic horseback riding lessons to adults and children with disabilities. Photos by Marilou Newell

Freezin’ for a Reason Polar Plunge223 viewsIt takes a certain type of person to jump into the cold ocean on New Year’s morning. Behold, the locals who fit that description as they enjoy a frosty January 1st at Mattapoisett Town Beach for the annual Freezin’ for a Reason Polar Plunge! Hundreds lined the beach to take the plunge, with bundled spectators watching from the sidelines and cheering as the plungers charged ahead screaming and shrieking with exhilaration. RMS C.A.R.E.S.223 viewsThe fourth-graders at Rochester Memorial School put on a presentation on Thursday, January 26, called RMS C.A.R.E.S. Each fourth grade class represented a word comprising the C.A.R.E.S. acronym: Cooperation, Assertiveness, Responsibility, Empathy, and Self-Control. Marion Natural History Museum223 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum's after school group learned some tricks to identifying local winter birds with Justin Barrett, president of the Nasketucket Bird Group. Students used binoculars to view robins, cardinals, mourning doves and Canada geese. We also spoke about the Great Backyard Bird Count that took place February 17-20. The students learned that 10 bees weigh the same as one M&M, and how bees communicate by dancing. We explored beekeeping equipment and which hive box holds the queen and which holds the honey. Marion Natural History Museum223 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum’s afterschool group had a chance to learn to identify certain local trees in winter by their bark. Students compared red cedar bark to red pine, took a close look at various lichens and mosses that use tree bark as a surface to grow on, and counted rings in a log supplied by Hartley Saw Mill in Rochester.
