Butterfly Release316 viewsDebbie Thompson of Marion raised monarch butterflies from caterpillar to chrysalis with her preschool students and finally released them on September 26. This is the second year Thompson raised butterflies, tagged them, and released them into the wild with her students. “For the kids it’s such a magical thing,” said Thompson. The bright blue sky made a spectacular backdrop for the butterflies’ bright wings as they flew away. Photos by Jean Perry

Marion Natural History Museum316 viewsOn Wednesday, Dec. 10th, the Marion Natural History Museum afterschool group enjoyed working on crafts from nature and recycled materials. Thank you to all the volunteers who made this such a happy and fun-filled event. Many, many thanks to Grace Moran for her kind donation of frames complete with glass, which the students used to create their own masterpieces for gift-giving. Marion Village 5K316 viewsThe Marion Village 5K is in its 19th year, and over 250 participants turned out to run the 3.1-mile course along the waterfront and through the quaint Marion village. Each teacher devised their own scavenger hunt for the kids that helped the students discover their classrooms. Marion Town Party 316 viewsThe town collected hundreds of wood pallets and stacked them sky high in the ball field beside the Town House in anticipation of the annual Marion Town Party on Saturday, August 27. The theme of this year’s party, “Out of This World,” was appropriately represented in the playful banner hung on the stack of firewood and eventually burned along with it in an enormous bonfire. Turtle Care316 viewsSome of the residents of Jenney Lane at The Cove in Marion have found a new passion in rescuing diamond-backed terrapin eggs and safely releasing the hatchlings into the wild. A private neighborhood group, along with “Turtle Guy” Don Lewis and wife Sue Weiber Nourse, created a terrapin habitat restoration project knows as the turtle garden at The Cove. Student Exhibit316 viewsUnder the supervision of art teacher Erin Kirk, the art students at Sippican School will exhibit a collection of works in the Marion Art Center’s Patsy Francis (upstairs) Gallery from February 13-March 11. This show celebrates the immense talent of the Sippican School students and will include several works from each grade level, representing various subjects and mediums.
