Marion Natural History Museum217 viewsOn Valentines Day, the Marion Natural History Museum's afterschool group had a chance to learn about humpback and right whales. Dr. Moore of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution showed the students how a drone may be used to observe a whale's spout to determine its health. We also had a chance to view bubble-netting practices of humpbacks, see how baleen plates fit in a whale's mouth, and discussed the hazards the whales face due to entanglements in fishing gear. Marion Natural History Museum217 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum's afterschool group enjoyed learning the history of the Bird Island lighthouse and viewing the return of the birds to the island. We spotted roseate terns, common terns, oyster catchers, some unhappy Canadian geese, and a nesting mallard duck. We also learned about the recent restoration efforts made by the state Department of Fish and Wildlife to improve drainage and provide adequate nesting habitat for the returning birds. Marion Town Party217 viewsChalk up another successful Marion Town Party as several hundred party-goers found good food and fun on the grounds of the Town House on 8/25. Children of all ages enjoyed inflatable games, climbing the rock wall, or jumping around to music. The annual party has its roots deep in the community and may have started as early at 1900. This year’s event featured live entertainment, a scavenger hunt, and lots of good food.

Marion Natural History Museum217 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum after school group enjoyed a woodland walk to collect various items from nature. The group collected pinecones, smelled sassafras trees, and had a great time collecting many colors of fallen leaves. Then it was back to the museum to construct plant presses and design colorful specimens. The group will bring their completed works back in a couple of weeks to laminate them. Many thanks to the parent volunteers and Tabor community service volunteers for all their help.

Santa’s boat docked at the Marion Wharf where the faces of hundreds of children lit up at his arrival. Santa boarded a horse-drawn carriage and paraded through the streets, passing businesses offering free goodies and dodging the whereabouts of that old Grinch who didn’t seem to mind Christmas coming at all this year.
