Vernal Pools178 viewsGary Johnson of the Mattapoisett Land Trust led about a dozen on an excursion to the vernal pool at the Woodcock Preserve off Long Plain Road on Saturday, April 16, where they spotted the egg masses of the blue-spotted salamander, a species of ‘special concern,’ and the wood frog. Mattapoisett Harbormaster178 viewsMattapoisett Harbormaster Jill Simmons has become a de facto art museum curator since the town acquired prints and photographs that now grace the walls of the tiny harbormaster’s office at Shipyard Park. Local photographer Misty King has several of her pieces on display, along with two pieces by USCG’s artist Michael Mazur. Mazur’s pieces depict scenes from the 2003 Bouchard oil spill off West Island. Simmons welcomes the public to stop by and take a look at the mini art installation. Photo by Marilou Newel

MemorialHorse 7705178 viewsThe Mattapoisett Memorial Day parade on Monday will feature its first-ever riderless horse known as a “caparisoned horse,” a historic tradition that honors warriors and highly esteemed soldiers and individuals during a funeral procession. Led by her owner, Cheryl Randall Mach, ‘Honey’ will be formally dressed with two boots belonging to Mach’s grandfather, a WWI cavalry veteran, mounted in the stirrups facing backwards along with a silver cavalry sword.

The OHS band played a number of tunes, while the Center School students sang patriotic songs and listened to Principal Rose Bowman read a series of poems and writings to remind the children of what the American flag stands for.
