Pink granite was mined from the site between the early 1700s through the early 1900s, and the MLT plans to purchase the property to preserve the quarries and carve out trails for public access. Mattapoisett Tree Committee 324 viewsOn March 9, the Mattapoisett Tree Committee announced the winners of the annual 5th-grade Tree City USA Arbor Day Foundation contest, with this year’s poster theme: “Trees Have Mass Appeal”. The first place prize of a $35 gift certificate went to Amanda Tomasso, whose poster now goes on to the statewide competition. The $25 second place prize went to Sasha Volkema. Family Fun Festival 324 viewsFamilies came out in record numbers to enjoy the 4th Annual Fall Free Family Fun Festival sponsored by the Mattapoisett’s Lion Club on October 19 held at Shipyard Park. Bruce Rocha of the club estimated attendance at over 400. Kids and adults alike enjoyed free face painting, bowling with pumpkins, a corn hole toss, snacks, hayrides to Ned’s Point and, yes, free pumpkins to take home. Brad Hathaway324 viewsIt took 32 years, but on October 3 Mattapoisett resident Brad Hathaway completed his “Walk around the World” along Aucoot Road, accompanied by well over 100 friends and supporters of his mission refocused some years ago from what had begun as a fitness prescription to a fundraising effort for the Mattapoisett Land Trust. Hathaway, 88, is a co-founder of the MLT and has dedicated his life toward preserving and protecting lands that his ancestors first came upon hundreds of years ago.
