Local Idols523 viewsMembers of the Showstoppers Musical Entertainment based in Mattapoisett recently took top honors at two regional Performing Arts Competitions. Nine girls competed with six entries at the Dynamite National Talent Competition at Quinsigamond College in Worcester on April 14 and ten girls competed with eight entries in the Headliners Performing Arts Competition held at East Providence High School in East Providence, RI. The group took home several awards from both events.

Senior Spring Fling523 viewsSeniors from Mattapoisett, Marion and Rochester participated in the eighth annual “Spring Fling” dance party on Sunday, May 6 in the Sippican School cafeteria. The event was hosted by the Marion Council on Aging (COA) with a group of student volunteers from Old Rochester Regional Junior High School, who not only helped serve refreshments, but also joined their elders on the dance floor for some contemporary and traditional dances. Mom's Marathon '07522 viewsAn estimated 400 runners and walkers came out to the Oxford Creamery in Mattapoisett on Sunday, May 13 to participate in the first annual Tiara Classic Mother’s Day 5K Road Race. The most impressive feat of the day was accomplished by runner Mary Cass (above) who won the women’s portion of the race, outdistancing the competition by several hundred feet while pushing her daughters, Acadia and Naomi, in a jogging stroller. Ruocco will be the Principal Speaker at Mattapoisett’s Annual Memorial Day Ceremonies to be held on Monday, May 28 beginning at 1:30 pm at Center School. LTC Ruocco graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1979 and served on the faculty of his alma mater from 1996 until his retirement in 2002, having served 23 years on active duty. The young bikers arrived with the goal of pedaling their way towards raising $10,000 in the fight to find a cure for cancer.
