DARE Returns1097 viewsRochester Patrolman and DARE Officer Kevin Flynn instructs one of four sixth grade classes at Rochester Memorial School about the dangers and health risks associated with smoking cigarettes. Officer Flynn and Rochester Police Chief Paul Magee recently pushed to revive the DARE Program at the town’s elementary school, despite cutbacks in state aid. Books for Sippican1684 viewsSippican School in Marion was the recipient of a very generous donation recently. Jason Zutaut, an executive with Strictly by the Book, heard about the need to expand the collection in the school’s Reading Book Room, which teachers use as a book resource. Unfortunately, it was limited to books for Kindergarten through Grade 3. When Mr. Zutaut heard about the “wish list” compiled by staff members at Sippican, he immediately responded with a generous donation of several books.Mar 14, 2006

Survivor Lessons1023 viewsOn March 3, a holocaust survivor visited Meg McKeon’s History class at Old Rochester Regional High School to share her memories from the war. Ms. Elizabeth Dopazo, an eleven-year-old at the time of the war, she was invited to speak to Ms. McKeon’s class through an organization called Facing History and Ourselves. “These students really are the last generation who will be able to meet a survivor face to face,” Ms. McKeon said.Mar 14, 2006

Spring Swing1174 viewsOn March 3, the Mattapoisett Youth Baseball Association (MYBA) sponsored their first annual “Spring Swing.” The event was held at Center School, kicking off the 2006 baseball season for the Town of Mattapoisett. This fundraising event gave the children of Mattapoisett an opportunity to showcase their batting skills, raise some money and have fun. Yoga for Youth1029 viewsStudents at Sippican School in Marion enjoy the benefits of yoga classes which have been sponsored at the school by the non-profit Yoga Kids, Inc. for the past six years. Teachers have noted marked improvement in students who take yoga classes as it helps them to better concentrate in class.
