EAGLE.jpg
The Eagle Has Landed407 viewsMarion resident Hope Vary was “blown away” to see a bald eagle perched in the trees above her 2010 Labor Day cookout. The eagle sighting in Marion was indicative of the population recovery that bald eagles are making in the United States. Although they are still considered endangered in Massachusetts, they have been taken off the federal list of endangered species. Photo by Hope Vary.

Bulldog Spirit!439 viewsCatch the spirit! It was some tween fun at Old Rochester Regional High School on Sunday, September 5, 2010 when the school’s varsity cheerleaders provided a cheer clinic fundraiser for young, aspiring cheerleaders. These younger cheerleaders will join the varsity squad at the ORR/Nauset football game on September 11, at the ORR David Hagen field at 7:00 pm. For more sports and ORR information, read the articles in this week’s issue from ORR students Anne Smith and Ben Resendes. Photos by Felix Perez.

Kids at the Block432 viewsIt was a little earlier than usual, but the annual Marion Block Party on August 28, 2010 went off without a hitch. Children enjoyed cotton candy, a bounce house and face-painting, while the grown-ups enjoyed conversation and good weather. It was an appropriate send-off to summer, before Old Rochester schools started back up on September 1. Photos by Felix Perez. September 2, 2010 edition

Yee Haw, Maw!450 viewsRochester’s Country Fair was a great success despite the cancellation of the Town Ball Game, Woodsman Show, the Block dance and the Bonfire due to EEE. The weather was perfect on Saturday as children raced frogs, climbed walls, bounced in castles and much more. Although the weather was less than perfect on Sunday, residents lined the streets with lawn chairs and umbrellas to watch as the Hillbilly themed parade passed. Photos by Felix Perez. Eeeeeeee407 viewsEastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) is on everyone’s minds this week as the state grapples with how to address the high levels of EEE found in mosquito samples. The Mattapoisett, Marion and Rochester Boards of Health canceled all evening activities on town grounds, and announced 6:00 pm closures of ball parks, playgrounds and town beaches as a result of what the state is calling a public health threat.

New Police Station462 viewsThe public was invited to a building dedication and ceremony for the new Marion police station on July 10, 2010. The town appropriated $3.8 million for the new building, which replaces the old police station on Spring Street. Among those in attendance were Police Chief Lincoln Miller, the Marion police department, the Board of Selectmen, Town Administrator Paul Dawson, Plymouth County Sheriff Joseph McDonald and members of the Police Station Building Committee. Celebrating Freedom431 viewsDespite funding setbacks, the Marion fireworks took place this year at Silver Shell Beach under perfectly clear skies. Revelers enjoyed the patriotic music of Phil Sanborn and the Marion Concert Band while brilliant colors illuminated the harbor. Unless the town can secure a permanent source of funding, next year’s fireworks may be in jeopardy. Photo by Felix Perez.

Still Running...442 viewsThey keep you running. The Mattapoisett Road Race Committee, pictured here in their committee t-shirts, has been hard at work over the past year to bring a celebration worthy of the 40-year benchmark. That’s right ¬– the Mattapoisett Road Race has been a part of your Fourth of July celebrations for 40 years! And with all that running, a lot of Old Rochester Regional students have benefitted from the scholarship money that the race raises. Here’s to another 40 years.
