• Holiday Hours – The Mattapoisett Free Public Library will be open the following hours during the holidays: December 24 10:00 to Noon, December 25 Closed, December 26 open at 10:00 am, December 31 10:00 to Noon, January 1 Closed, January 2 open at 10:00 am.
• Food for Fines – During the month of December, library patrons are encouraged to bring in non-perishables for current late materials rather than paying an overdue fine. In the spirit of the season, the library staff and the Friends are together launching this effort to add more food to the shelves of the local food pantries. Containers for canned goods, etc, are on both levels of the library, courtesy of the Friends. This does not include previous fees accumulated or charges for lost books, but is intended for current overdue fines only. Please speak with a library staff member with any questions. All donations of food will be appreciated and passed along to local food pantries.
• Family Story Time for the Holidays – Join the Library staff and friends for a special celebration on Saturday, December 5 from 11:00 to 1:00 pm. Drop-in for story times throughout mid-day and enjoy cookie decorating. Take home some sweet creations and enjoy stories of the season as part of the Village Stroll and "Holiday in the Park" Events.
• Holiday Reading Suggestions – Interested in a Christmas read or looking for suggestions for book gifts for folks on your gift list? Ask the library staff at the Circulation Desk for a free copy of Book Page, and the prepared list of books set in a holiday setting.
• MFPL Book Discussion Group – The next meeting of the Mattapoisett Free Public Library Book Discussion Group will be held Saturday, January 9 at 2:00 pm. The title to be discussed is E. B White by Scott Elledge. Everyone is welcome to attend and enjoy the lively discussion of this interesting man of letters. Copies of the biography can be placed on hold through the SAILS catalog. Please ask the library staff if you need assistance reserving a copy.
• Writers' Group – The Mattapoisett Library Writers' Group meets every other Tuesday at 6:30 pm in the Marine Room. The next meetings are November 24 and December 8. All genres are discussed in a supportive and cordial get-together. Everyone is welcome.
• Author of BirdTalk Presentation – Alan Powers, author of BirdTalk and a professor of English at Bristol Community College, will present a program on the conversation with winter birds on Thursday, January 28 at 7:00 pm. Mr. Powers will discuss his "listening, watching, and replying to birds" as detailed in his entertaining and informative book subtitled Conversations with Birds. This program is co-sponsored with the library and the Naskatucket Bird Club. Refreshments will be served. Everyone is welcome.
•Movie Night – On Saturday November 28 Junior Friends Of The Library is hosting a family movie night. They will be presenting Nim's Island directed by Jennifer Flackett and Mark Levin. The movie stars Abigail Breslin, Jodie Foster and Gerard Butler. Movie time is 1:00 pm, and all ages are welcomed. This movie is rated PG. Parents must stay with younger children. Refreshments will be served. See you at the movies!
